I would love to know when it was made (when I bought my used Browning Hi-Power I used Browning website/serial number and got it's build date easily) but couldn't find same on S&W official website. Anyway, its Stainless Steel, 4" barrel and has '38 S&W. SPECIAL CTG. stamped on right side of barrel, walnut grips and is in great shape.

If it is a pre model number gun then it can't be stainless steel since S&W didn't make stainless in a in the 50s. Could be nickel or a hard chrome finish. If it truely has no serial number there are legal problems with ownership as every S&W 38 Special that left the factory did so with a serial number. Does the gun have adjustable or fixed sights.

The minuses are the (likely) caliber and alteration. While decent specimen Victory Models are trading up, yours is an altered version of the highest production variant (I think). Therefore, if it is .38 S&W (not marked Special) it has the value of a "monkeyed-with" M&P (Military & Police) in ho-hum condition.I agree with Waidmann, the barrel was likely changed out in Feb. 1945. It's hard to tell what the numbers/letters are around the grip pin. Haven't seen that before. But, the N usually stands for nickel. Since the N is not boxed in, that is likely the original finish. Oct 5, 2018 · Welcome to the forum. Your gun is a 38 M&P from about 1950. The serial number is the one on the butt that starts with the letter C. In 1958 S&W started using model numbers. Guns like your 38 M&P became known as the model 10. They are the most commonly produced S&W revolver.
